A short quiz about random things.

Without cheating....

1. Name as many songs as you can with the word "Tears" in the title (Max 10).
2. Name as many horse breeds as you can (Max 10).
3. Name as many Japanese automotive brands (not sub-brands) as you can (Max 10).
4. Name as many extinct languages as you can (Max 10).
5. Name as many religions as you can (be specific; "paganism" won't count) (Max 10).

Scoring:
Each question is worth between 0 and 10 points.
If you were to name 10 correct items for each question, you'd get 50/50, which is 100%.

You are not penalized for wrong answers, but I only count the first 10 answers you list for each question, so there's no use in listing 20 hoping you'll get 10 right. Might as well stop when you get to 10, if you get to 10.

Have fun!

    Yes, motorcycles count for #3.

I will allow sub-types of Christianity, because I forgot to say NOT to do that. I wanted Christianity (Catholic, Protestant, Greek Orthodox, Coptic) all to count as ONE, but since I didn't say so, I'll allow you guys easy points ;-)

  8. Ok, Mags and Giusi have told me they're gonna sit this one out, and Byte and Jovian haven't been heard from yet (though they can still play - all the quizzes are just for fun and open-ended as far as I'm concerned).

So it's time for answers! Or grading yours, to be more specific. Remember, it's just silly questions for fun!

    Some clarification on two points!

One: For extinct languages I didn't specify whether becoming extinct in writing while still being spoken (eg, Mayan) or the opposite, becoming extinct as a spoken language though continuing to exist in writing (eg, Latin) were permissible, so I'll allow them and try to be more specific next time.

Two: For religions, I didn't specify whether denominations of a major religion could be counted as separate religions. I didn't want them to be, but again since I didn't spell that out, I'll accept denominations (Christianity could be Catholic, Orthodox, Coptic, Protestant [which could be further split into dozens of sub-denominations], even Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, and Jehovah's Witness if you want to get very loose with the term "Christianity"; similarly, Islam could be split into Sunni, Shiite, Wahhabi, Sufi, and so on).

Ok, with that out of the way, the grades...

  11. Well, thanks for playing, everyone! It was fun. I'll think of some more questions and we'll do it again.

Feel free to suggest any good quiz questions YOU might come up with too!

The next quiz will be themed: I'm pretty sure it will be the Solar System quiz, either that or an animal quiz I've just written. Any preference? And do you like themes, randoms, or a mix?

    Thanks again for playing! ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  12. I just knew treasure madness would come in handy for something... he he he

    ReplyDelete
  13. Random mixes in theme please. :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ps.

Are "tears" equal with "teardrops"...? :)

And, scientology is not a religion, it is a business. (For dummies) IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good point... Teardrops isn't the same as "tears", so take away a point from me :P

Also, I agree with you that Scientology is just a stupid pyramid business scheme, BUT they've declared it a religion and filed the paperwork with the government so they don't have to pay taxes. Pretty sickening, and all the people who fall for it are stupid, but technically now it's protected from taxation since it's considered a religion by the US government. Other governments may (and probably are) different. I think Germany may have outlawed it, even.

If the US outlawed it, half of Hollywood would have to leave the country! Haha! To which I say: GOOD. Get that creep Tom Cruise outta here and while we're at it, that Catholic racist, antisemite, and wife beater Mel Gibson.

There, I feel better now :)

    Thanks for the comments, Mandus.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yepp, in Germany Scientology is outlawed, hell yeah. :) We should do the same, especially since they took my cousine. And she is not a dumb girl - she is smart, educated, mother of two, and still they got her. I do not understand. F*cking brainwashers. :S

Anyway, thanks for the quiz, waiting for more! :)))

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm generally useless at this type of quiz. Ask me for specific information and i can often come up with it, this really makes me thing. And I'm sorry I'm posting late, you caught me during my "making the most of the last days of my holiday time": mountains, beach and veggie restaurants. And I'm ashamed to say I fell asleep on the sofa on Thursday evening, otherwise I would've answered then.

    Anyway:

    1.
    -Tears on my Pillow
    -Tracks of my Tears
    -Tears of a Clown

    2.
    -Asturcon (Asturian breed)
    -Shetland (if ponies count)
    -Mustang
    -Palomino (breed or colour, hmm?)
-Carmargue horses (not sure if they have a specific name)
    -Arabian
    - And that prancing Spanish type whose name I don't know.
    3.
    - Toyota
    - Nissan
    - Suzuki

    4. What do you mean by extinct? Not used at all or not spoken/studied? I'm guessing the former. Which means Latin and ancient Greek are out already, and that, embrassingly, leaves me a bit stuck. I'll try:

    - Aramaic - still around or not, hmm, I don't know.
    - Erm... old forms of Celtic?
    - Gothic
    - Aztec
    - Mayan
    - Inca - though for the last three I think might have different names, something beginning with Tex, or Qe or Na for the Aztecs...gah, need ot know more.
    - Do hieroglyphs count?
    - Old English?

    5.
    - Islam
    - Christianity
    - Judaism
    - Sikhism
    - Mormonism
    - Zoroastrianism
    - Hinduism
    - Buddhism (religion or philosophy???)
    - Taoism
    - Do ancient Greek and Roman count?

Heh, funny how the religion question was the easiest one.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Just been reading everyone's answers - it's interesting arriving late sometimes becasue you get the full discussion all in one go.

I'll wait for your grading, don't think I did too badly after all. I'm not fussed about my lack of Japanese (or any other) automotive manufacturers, though perhaps should be readfing up on my horses - why not ask about cats next time though? ;) Although I might invent my own classification system:

    - Cheeky
    - Scratchy-Bitey
    - Climber
    - Hunter Extraodinaire
    - Lazy
    - Adventurer (Indoor or Outdoor)
    - Royal
    - Easily
    - Snuggly - with two sub-classifications: under duvet and on duvet)
    - Sneaky-Hidey
    - Mad-Half-Hour Puss
    - Stroke Lover - and here you'd have lots of sub-classifications: belly rub lover, tin chickler, head rubber, neck scratcher, ear massager, back scratcher, paw rubber, nose stroker, etc.

Of course these would always be combined, and you'd have to take into account changes with age, but the main perosnaily of the cat would always remain the same.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hee hee, I love the cat types! Maybe you should have been a cat psychologist instead of a teacher :)

We could always collaborate on a textbook and put phony credentials after our names!

    ---

    Raelha

    1. 3 points.
    2. 6 points. (Thinking of Paso Fino, perhaps? Here's a good site for Spanish breeds)
    3. 3 points.
    4. I think you mean "Quechua" etc for the mesoamerican languages, but I gave them to you like the others, as well as latin and ancient greek, and all the others except "hieroglyphs," since several old languages used them - it's a form of writing, not a language itself.
    So, 9 points.
    5. 10 points.

    Total: 31 points.

Thanks for playing, even if it was "late" it doesn't matter. It's always fun when people come by!

-Owner of a lazy, snuggly, stroke-lover (of all denominations). =)

  20. Mandula, sorry to hear about your cousin. I think the knowing perpetrators of scientology (not the brainwashed victims) should be burned at the stake.

It seems like a joke of a religion/organization when you first hear about it, but it's ruined many lives (and abused many children) and they are notorious for stalking, threatening, pointless but endlessly suing, and basically scaring and harassing the hell out of anyone who tries to expose them for what they are; even New York Times reporters and people who've covered Al-Qaeda and wars and other cults say scientologists are the worst. Grr.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oops, the easily was meant to be easily-distracted. And the lazy classification should have sub-categories too: the eternal sleeper and the general wallower.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1. Tears-
    Tears of a Clown
    Tears In heaven

    2. Clydesdale

    3. Yamaha, Toyota, Kawasaki, Honda, Nissan

    4. Latin,

    5. Jainism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Ba'hai, Scientology, Shinto

  23. Hey Pop Culturalist! Thanks for posting.

    1. 2 points
    2. 1 point
    3. 5 points
    4. 1 point
    5. 10 points

    Total = 19 points.

    You know your religions :-D!

Thanks for popping by - I'll try to have more interactive stuff like this up soon and hopefully I'll see ya again.

I like your blog a lot - witty, sardonic, and unmerciful to the forces of stupidity (and some non-stupidity) that are our cultural icons. Good stuff!

  24. Oh yeah, the best part of your dictionary entries is probably the captions on the pics. LOL.

I'm sure you've read or at browsed Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary. It's like a 100 year old version of your blog, but like, without pictures that have funny captions. Still if for some off reason you haven't, check it out.

It's in the public domain by now, or you can find a copy at just about any book store. He's got skewered definition that are still sidesplitting or just dead on even today. He and Mark Twain were satirists way ahead of their time.

    Cheers!
