Aha. This reminds me of something I wish I'd done with a couple of mates, though the experience may have left me withered by ghosts and anger and sadness. They visited an old asylum, disused. They described a scene very much like the photos here. The stuff of nightmares left lying around as if everybody had just vanished into thin air. The record books too. They were the most telling. Entries where peopl's notes go on about the drugs, treatments by e.c.t. and all sorts of abominations. The sad part, they said, was that there was not much mention of physical health deteriorating, but that people were just registered as 'died' and such like. No explanation, no apparent concern for their well being beforehand.
I'm a fortunate individual that I have never been an 'inmate'.
I visited one of my schizo friends 11 years ago when he had an 'episode' The whitewashed walls, high ceilings, locked doors. Dozens of bored but edgy people. Above all, there was an absolutely palpable feeling of unrest and terrible disturbance, even though the place was quiet and nobody was doing much at all.
That hospital had a cricket pitch at the back. Odd place for a game I thought when we played there.
Yeah, you're dead on. I've spent quite some time in a few of these places (not disused, the whitewashed kind you described), and they are exactly like that. It's ghastly and certainly doesn't make you any better, just makes you want out.
I've undergone ECT and lots of treatments and you couldn't get me to step foot in one of these places again, even for a photography shoot. In fact, that's all I really even want to say about them. Did you notice the patient on the index card getting seconal injections for being uncooperative was only 12 years old?
I just looked up seconal online. It would've been safer to give the poor kid smack.
Barbarism.
Absolutely. I think it's what killed Marilyn Monroe if I'm not mistaken. Thanks for your taking a look at this... this kind of things haunts me so I don't really joke about it.
