Morrissey, "Jack The Ripper"

Oh, you look so tired
Mouth slack and wide
Ill-housed and ill-advised
Your face is as mean
As your life has been

Crash into my arms
I want you
You don't agree
But you don't refuse
I know you

And I know a place
Where no one is likely to pass
Oh, and you don't care if it's late
And you don't care if you're lost

And oh, you look so tired
But tonight you presume too much
Too much, too much
And if it's the last thing I ever do
I'm gonna get you

Crash into my arms
I want you
You don't agree
But you don't refuse
I know you

And no one knows a thing about my life
I can come and go as I please
And if I want to, I can stay
Oh, or if I want to, I can leave
Nobody knows me
Nobody knows me
Nobody knows me
Nobody knows me

Though I can't put my finger on why it's called Jack the Ripper, I do like the song a great deal.

I think it's from HIS perspective, in a twisted romantic, victorian, strange sort of way. Love and horror. The noises in the song are a bit creepy, though the song is nice, and seems loving. But then "Nobody knows me" and "Your face is as mean as your life has been" - seeming to depict a psychotic person and a destitute person (woman?) of the street, of the lower classes, to which life has been cruel. Just my guesses, I've not read anything. But it does with the "ripper" legend profiles.

A bit of double-meaning and wordplay as usual... a soothing, lonely but hopeful sounding song which could potentially mean something altogether more awful. If not for the title as the key to unlock some of the phrasing, I think we'd be none the wiser.

Like I said, I'm only guessing. But I know this guy's mind a bit... it's a bit how I would do things, I suppose.
