Something I forgot to mention.

When the mood is right,
Please don't completely reach those heights
And lose your light.

For lights are dim,
They can only be seen when the soul within
Is free from whim.

Don't lose the plot:
The thing you seek can never be caught
You'll find you've got

Forever emptied hands,
And excess is regress in the mind of a man
Who seeks to understand.

don't really understand this, seems personal about someone, and I like it - the rhythm i guess

It's not particularly personal. Just saying, when thing are good, don't try to make them great, enjoy them. People tell you things aren't so bad when you're low, don't get too down on yourself. When you're up, don't look for some ultimate Heaven - whether by drugs or alcohol, or risky investments, or rash marriage proposals, or binge eating, or whatever. Stick to the balance and moderation that got you there, and maybe you'll stay a bit longer rather than splashing down like an icy meteor into the vast, dark ocean that is the flipside of happiness.

Appreciate the meaning....for non-poets, it's sometimes hard to pin-point what it is about a poem you like or dislike. Now I like it even more. Good lessons.

Thanks for even caring about the meaning. You're turning into a pretty sophisticated poetry reader.

I'm learning I guess. Maybe since I was never taught about poetry I never knew what to look for. I realize that I like the poems that don't obviously rhyme. They are your strong suit, IMO
