Live a good life.

If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.

If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.

If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

—Marcus Aurelius

Pretty daring words, or in Rome at that time, were they appropriate? I don't know Roman history except what I have seen on TV shows.

I think Marcus Aurelius was considered one of the best and most erudite of the later Roman Emperors. Trajan conquered more perhaps, like a throwback to days of Julius, but Marcus left a lot of quotable material in his memoirs, or "Meditations." Some dispute that all of the writing was his, but none doubt that he was a philosophical man keenly aware of his place in history, and speculated on many aspects of human psychology as well as dabbling in natural history, theology, and other subjects. I think he'd be considered one of the 5 or 6 "greats" of all the Emperors of Rome, but I'm no expert at Roman history either. I'm curious to find out more about him. I know he was played by Richard Harris!
