Shucks, oh well, I was never much of a fan of Dewey anyway. All you young squirts don't even know who he was. LOL

You're right, I know very little about Thomas Dewey. I think he was from New York, of course I know the story about the famous newspaper headline declaring him to have defeated Truman based on the Tribune's own projections, and I would guess that meant he ran for President in the '40s, either '44 or '48 if my olympiad/presidential backwards counting is correct. I think he was fairly young at the time too, but I could be wrong.

Much more interesting is John Dewey, no relation, who was a philosopher and psychologist with strong pragmatist views who fought for progressive education in a time of conservatism, and who by the way was on a committee or cleared Trotsky of the charges leveled at him by Stalin! Not that it helped Trotsky, who was assassinated a few years later.

But neither of these are the point. The real thing we want to know is: Would you have gotten the original quiz question correct without researching it online? (Even that might be a hard thing to search for, but I'm sure it could be found.) Answer honestly!

I wanted to say Istanbul,..but didn't know if it had a 3rd name. Really wanted that Dewey button!! Have more? Good going Jon, the proud owner of the D.B. Award.

Frankly, I prefer Byzantium to Instanbul. I am a fan of the name Constantinople, for whatever that's worth.

Sadly, I only remember the answer because my jerky college roommate spent a semester in Istanbul and I insisted on calling it Byzantium. He came back all holier than thou, which was hard on roommate relations since I usually fit that niche.

I was going to suggest New Amsterdam, New York, and Stengertopia, but only an elite few recognize the latter...

I hear ya man. I was gonna say "name the TWO cities..." but I realized it violated the rule that it has to be widely recognized by that name.

Maybe we're just a little early with this quiz. We'll try it again in a couple of years when I run the Internet and you are the Dicktator of Stengertopia.

See who gets all the Dewey buttons then!
